Related genetically to the common mint herb, Forskolin is made from the bulbous roots of a plant called Coleus forskohlii which grows perennially in tropical and subtropical parts of India and countries in the east of Africa such as Uganda, as well as countries such as Thailand. In Asian cultures, its roots are served as a relish and taste like slightly sour pickles. Traditionally and historically, it boasts, a wide range of curative uses, and is known to be the ancient remedy of choice for conditions such as stomach ailments, skin conditions, infections resulting from diseases such as syphilis, and even as a pain-reliever for rheumatism.
It is known that Ayurvedic culture used Coleus forskohliiin the treatment of heart, lung and urinary conditions and problems. It has also been used as an alternative to conventional oral contraception and to reduce excessive menstruation. In the 1970s, it has been known to have been used in the treatment of cardiovascular and circulatory issues, as well as certain forms of cancer.
How is it possible for an herb to be able to address such a wide range of ailments? According to scientists, one of Forskolin’s features is that administered in the correct proportions, it does tend to stimulate the enzyme known as Adenylyl cyclase in all its known forms. What this means is, once ingested, Forskolin will trigger a response in a vast range of cells and tissues all over the body, which has a knock-on effect on other cells and tissues. But one quality unique to Forskolin is that many of its actions are reversible, unlike other well used and well-marketed fat burners.
For this reason, in the last decade or so, Forskolin has become the drug of choice for fitness enthusiasts and gym trainers for its reputed testosterone and fat burning properties. Its use as an orally taken drug is relatively new – it was formerly used in tiny quantities as an eye drop, powder or part of an infusion for intravenous treatments. While the weight loss properties of the herb, which has been developed commercially as a supplement, have not been exhaustively researched or documented yet, in a small case study conducted, Forskolin’s effects on obesity have been proven by researchers at the University of Kansas, to be efficacious in addressing conditions such as obesity, appetite control and related situations. These trials were documented on a 12-week case study on overweight men. The participants in the case study took both 250mg of Forskolin twice daily, and placebos. And it was overwhelmingly proven that the Forskolin contributed convincingly to the weight loss of the men who were taking the real Forskolin and not the placebo.
The interactions between Forskolin supplements and other medicines or supplements are not yet comprehensively researched or documented. In addition, there is no list of the possible contraindications, side effects and effects of overdosing on Forskolin, owing to the as yet undocumented evidence of broader clinical trials. At this stage, however, researchers do know that it’s not safe to take Forskolin while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding of if you suffer from a genetic tendency to have polycystic kidney disease.
Customer reviews concerning the efficacy of Forskolin are mixed, with many of them unequivocally declaring Forskolin the miracle drug for weight loss. Interestingly among those who have criticized its value negatively, the common consensus is that it doesn’t work or that weight loss is not as exaggeratedly rapid as those individuals may have been led to expect. This is productive and positive for Forskolin, given that the public might not understand the pragmatics of losing weight under the treatment of a supplement. They also may not be taking it properly. None of the reviews that are published on the internet comment on secondary health concerns experienced after having taken a course of Forskolin. But regardless of what other people have said, it is always recommendable to consult your health practitioner before undertaking a commitment to a new health supplement.
